Square Columns

A quick look back into 1900s western architecture provides a good example of the use and versatility of square porch columns. Traverse any wooden sidewalk and square porch columns will be present with just about every step. The trampling of boots and horses whinnying in the background can almost be heard.

Also a key component of Colonial architecture, a drive through the old South presents plenty of examples. Shadows of lazy days sitting on the porch sipping lemonade come to mind.

Typically square porch columns are used for both design and structural safety, but they fell out of popularity for some time in favor of the more elegant round columns. They are making a comeback into the contemporary building design of today's times.

A decorative element for any porch, square porch columns are typically manufactured from wood or fiberglass. Their surface may be smooth or contain a simple grooved design. They may be painted or stained to match the exterior of the home.

Square porch columns provide a strong statement and a good dose of curb appeal for any home.
